As part of the Sample studios in house open day I proposed a project to recreate the John Butt painting. This"A view of Cork from Audley Place" from 1755 painting holds dear to me because of the many times I have admired it in the Crawford Art Gallery over the years. It was the first time I had seen a depiction of the city as it was when the river Lee ran through Patrick Street, Grand Parade and the South Mall. The only remaining evidence of the river’s former course are a few moorings in locations like Patrick Street and quayside cellar access to houses on the South Mall.
The painting also takes in Watercourse Road and the surrounding countryside which is now been urbanised beyond recognition. In the distance just down from were St. Finbarr’s Cathedral stands you can see were Sample studios now stands so I saw this as a fitting specimen of art for us to recreate as a group of Cork Artists.
This project was inspired by the work of Tina Mc Callen RA whom I have assisted in the past. She has been recreating paintings for over a decade now. You can check out her face book page:
